Signing Cristiano Ronaldo was a mistake: Former Juventus chairman

Former Juventus chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has boldly claimed signing Cristiano Ronaldo was a mistake. He believes it would be best for the Serie A club if he leaves soon.

Cristiano Ronaldo was signed from Real Madrid in 2018 for a reported £100 million fee. The Italian side were keen on winning the Champions League but have not managed to do so, even with the Portuguese star in the side.

With rumors suggesting Cristiano Ronaldo is looking for an exit, former Juventus chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli wants the deal to be done soon. He added that the Portuguese star 'hampers' their attacks and the Italian side play better when he is off the pitch.

Giovanni Cobolli Gigli told SerieANews:

"I've always been honest: signing Ronaldo was a mistake. It's impossible to recoup the investment and it will remain that way. He's a great player, but I have to be honest – the sooner he leaves, the better for him and for Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly working on leaving Juventus before the transfer window closes this month. PSG and Manchester City have been linked with the former Real Madrid star."I hope that Massimiliano Allegri knows how to continue using him like he did against Udinese. That is, with intelligence and when the game is in progress. Ronaldo hampers Juventus' attack. Without him, they can do excellent things in collective terms."

Giovanni Cobolli Gigli is not the only one asking Juventus to sell Cristiano Ronaldo. Former midfielder Massimo Mauro was speaking with Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year when he urged the club to sell the Portuguese star.

“Ronaldo has never been a leader where he has played and he never will be. He is like a company and his turnover is more important to him than the success of the team. Cristiano doesn’t drag his team-mates along with him, he always wants them to give him the ball to score goals. He is a great individualist, he is not a team player," Mauri had said.

Cristiano Ronaldo had joined Juventus on a 4-year deal and has scored 101 goals for them so far.

Transfer Talk: Cristiano Ronaldo pushing for Manchester City move as Juventus exit looms

The future of Cristiano Ronaldo could be back in the Premier League, with reports that the Juventus striker is pushing for a move to Manchester CityL'Equipe writes that the 36-year-old is keen to see a deal over the line this summer and envisions the blue half of Manchester as the next step in his career.

The Portugal star recently requested to not be named in the starting XI for his side's most recent Serie A clash against Udinese, intensifying speculation over whether he would remain in Turin for the season. And with Manchester City actively pursuing a front man, Pep Guardiola might now have a decision to make over whether to proceed with a move for Harry Kane with the potential of acquiring the former Manchester United talisman now a possibility.

Ronaldo has just one year remaining on his contract, meaning the Old Lady might have no choice but to move on from their No. 7 if they are to recoup some of the £99.2 million transfer fee they paid Real Madrid in 2018.

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be busy in the transfer market, with Sky Sports reporting that the club have held talks with the representatives of Lyon's Houssem Aouar. The 23-year-old has been the subject of speculation throughout the summer, with just two years remaining on his contract, and despite the midfielder's preference to join a club in the Champions League, Nuno Espirito Santo's side are confident they can convince Aouar to swap Lyon for North London.

- Lyon have identified a replacement for Memphis Depay in the form of Zenit St. Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun, according to Le10 Sport, which reports that the Ligue 1 club have made an offer of €11 million to secure the signature of the 26-year-old. The Iran international has already scored five goals in six matches this season after hitting 19 in 21 last term.

- Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Rafinha is keen on a move back to Serie A, with AC Milan as his preference, Calciomercato writes. Technical director Paolo Maldini is still on the lookout for an attacking midfielder before the window closes, and a move for the 28-year-old could go ahead if the player continues to push for relocation to the city where he last featured for Internazionale in 2018.

- England U21 star Noni Madueke is beginning to attract interest from a host of Premier League clubs, according to the Mail. Manchester United, Liverpool and Spurs are all reportedly keen on the 19-year-old winger, for whom PSV Eindhoven are said to demand a transfer fee of around £34 million. Madueke has scored six goals in nine appearances for the Dutch club so far this season, including two in Champions League clashes against Galatasaray and FC Midtjylland.

Arsenal host Chelsea in a Premier League London derby on Sunday with pressure already on the Gunners to cause an upset.

Mikel Arteta’s side have had something of a frustrating transfer window despite the £50m arrival of Ben White, and stumbled into the new season with a 2-0 opening-day defeat at newly-promoted Brentford.

The performance and result set alarm bells ringing, and Arsenal must pick themsleves up quickly if they are to better last season’s eighth-placed finish.

As for Chelsea, the Champions League holders are expected to be serious title contenders this term - especially after re-signing £97.5m Romelu Lukaku. The Blues brushed off Crystal Palace 3-0 last weekend, and Thomas Tuchel will be confident of three more points in north London... but anything can happen in a derby.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Arsenal vs Chelsea is scheduled for a 4:30pm BST kick-off on Sunday, August 22, 2021.

The match will be played at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal vs Chelsea team news

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette both missed the trip to Brentford due to illness, and Arteta is unsure whether the forwards will be available for this weekend.

Eddie Nketiah would have been an option, but he is out with an ankle injury, while Thomas Partey (ankle) and Gabriel (knee) are also sidelined.

Folarin Balogun struggled in leading the line at Brentford, and Arteta could be tempted to deploy Gabriel Martinelli up top with Bukayo Saka coming on in the flank.

As for Chelsea, club-record signing Lukaku has declared himself fit to face the Gunners, with the only question mark over whether he will start or come off the bench for his second debut for the Blues.

N’Golo Kante should be back from an ankle injury, though Ruben Loftus-Cheek is out after testing positive for Covid-19 - and Hakim Ziyech is recovering from the shoulder injury he picked up in the Super Cup win.

Trevoh Chalobah has started the season well with a memorable goal against Palace, and could start once again here - though Tuchel may be tempted to bring Thiago Silva back in for his experience.

On paper, Chelsea are firm favourites for this derby - but given Arsenal won both meetings last season, it is unwise to back a comprehensive victory.

Much will depend on whether Aubemayeng and Lacazette are available, as Arsenal looked short of attacking ideas against Brentford in their absence.

Still, Chelsea will fancy their chances of a win with Lukaku likely to play some part.

Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Arsenal wins: 80

Draws: 58

Chelsea wins: 65

Arsenal won both League meetings last season, beating Chelsea 3-1 at home in December and leaving Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 victory in May.

Death toll rises to 77 from Turkey floods; 47 reported missing

At least 77 people have been killed and emergency workers continue to search for 47 others missing after flash floods swept through Turkish Black Sea provinces, authorities said.

The floods last week brought chaos as torrents of water tossed dozens of cars and heaps of debris along streets, destroyed buildings and bridges, closed roads and damaged electricity infrastructure.

At least 62 people died as a result of floods in Kastamonu province. Another 14 people died in Sinop and one in Bartin, the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) said on Monday.

Forty-seven people were reported missing in Kastamonu and Sinop, it said.

AFAD said some 8,000 personnel, backed by 20 rescue dogs, are involved in the rescue and assistance efforts.

Drone footage showed massive damage in the town of Bozkurt in Kastamonu province, where rescue teams searched demolished buildings.

More than 2,000 people were evacuated from affected areas, some with the help of helicopters and boats, AFAD said. About 40 villages remain without power.

Weather forecasters warned of further flooding because of expected heavy rainfall on Monday in Black Sea provinces to the east of the regions affected last week.

The heavy flooding came after Turkey endured a searing heatwave and as crews in the south were taming wildfires that raced across the country’s Mediterranean coast.

Climate scientists say there is little doubt that climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas is driving more extreme events – such as heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, floods and storms – as the planet warms.

Manchester United will hope to continue their blistering start to the new Premier League season when they travel to face Southampton on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is looking to mount a serious title challenge this term after finishing a distant second behind Manchester City in 2020/21, and laid down an emphatic early marker with a 5-1 thrashing of rivals Leeds at Old Trafford that saw Bruno Fernandes register a stylish hat-trick and Paul Pogba lay on no fewer than four assists.

That rout saw Manchester United top the table ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool after the opening weekend and they will be favourites to record a second successive victory at St Mary’s, having become only the fourth team in the history of the English top-flight to go a whole season unbeaten away from home last year.

Southampton have been tipped to struggle this season after a topsy-turvy 2020/21 campaign that saw them top the table for a short time in November before a dreadful second half that led to a nosedive amid a slew of injuries.

Southampton vs Man Utd team news

Southampton are set to remain without academy graduates Sam McQueen and Will Smallbone, who are both sidelined with knee injuries.

Manchester United were boosted ahead of their thumping of Leeds by the overdue unveiling of £42million signing Raphael Varane, who will hope to play some part on the south coast.

Fellow high-profile new recruit Jadon Sancho made his debut with a 15-minute cameo on opening day and was part of a strong Manchester United lineup for a behind-closed-doors practice match against Burnley at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The likes of Jesse Lingard, Harry Maguire, Fred, Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly and Tom Heaton also featured in that 3-1 win, though there was no Varane.

Manchester United are still without Marcus Rashford (shoulder) and Alex Telles (ankle), though goalkeeper Dean Henderson - who, like Lingard, has been recovering after testing positive for Covid-19 - could return to contention this weekend.

Likewise Edinson Cavani, who scored two goals off the bench in a memorable fightback at St Mary’s last season. He has now completed a mandatory period of isolation following his return from Uruguay after Copa America.

Southampton vs Man Utd prediction

Manchester United were absolutely irresistible in the second half against Leeds, with Fernandes and Pogba unplayable as they ran the show, but the likes of Scott McTominay also hugely influential.

If they can rediscover those sorts of consistently dominant home performances and maintain last season’s incredible away form, then a genuine title tilt could really be on the cards this term.

Southampton will be firmly up against it here with horrible memories of last season’s meetings with Manchester United when they led 2-0 at home and lost 3-2 before being humiliated 9-0 at Old Trafford in February.

Away win.

Southampton 1-3 Manchester United.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Southampton wins: 7

Manchester United wins: 28

Draws: 9

Southampton has not beaten Manchester United in any competition since January 2016 - a run of 11 matches.

On that day, Charlie Austin netted on his Saints debut as Louis van Gaal’s United were booed off at Old Trafford.
